While Sally Dwyer's portraits have photographic exactitude, there is a warmth and depth that only the artist herself can impart. She attributes this more to the way she feels about her subject matter than to how she achieves it.
Sally cultivated her ability through formal training, earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Gulf Park College, Gulfport, Mississippi where she sampled a variety of mediums including oil, watercolor and pastels. But she kept coming back to pastels, and learned to layer colors and incorporate light and shadow that give her images a lifelike quality.
Foremost, she strives to capture the individual personality, devoting a great deal of time to the eyes, for if the eyes are indeed the windows to the soul, Sally does her best to make the panes sparkle clearly.
Her portraits hang in banks, libraries and companies thoughout the country. However, the overwhelming majority of her work graces the walls of private homes, where the portraits are appreciated by the people who treasure the animals themselves.
Sally has over the years discovered a creative community that is recognizing what Sally and other animal lovers have known all along, that an animal's natural beauty needs no alteration, only a means for expression.
